Matt Pless has impressed me beyond belief with his song “When The Frayed Wind Blows”. I pride myself with my lyric writing and when I listen to this song Matt puts a fire inside me that makes me want to sit down and fill up an entire composition notebook with new songs. I know I wasn’t the first to call Matt Pless a lyrical genius but I may be the first to call him a lyricist’s lyricist. What do I mean by this? Matt’s an inspiration to me and other singer-songwriters and he has been for many years but this song in particular has raised the bar higher than it’s ever been, in my opinion. That is why I labeled this video as a MUST SEE because I truly believe that this is one of the greatest songs ever written. Below I’ve included an excerpt from the lyrics of “When The Frayed Wind Blows” simply to give weight to this article. ENJOY!
“The preachers sell salvation To the faithful on their knees Some prey upon our need and want For something to believe And some have spun the doctrines Holy guide toward paradise To justify injustices and centuries of genocide Surrender to your temples To your alters or your shrines The weapons used by shepherds So the sheep will keep in line Conflicting congregations Thinking only of themselves If that’s the path to heaven Hate to see the road to hell I tell ya’ they take a vision make religion, cause division Keep you vacant and complacent And dependent on a system By creating ways to separate Utilizing class and race Prejudice perpetuates And keeps monopolies in place…”
