Clyde Stubblefield was one of the unsung greats of the drum world. He was active for more than 50 years, worked with some of the greatest names in the music business, including Otis Redding and James Brown, and was the creator of one of the most sampled drum beats in history (from Funky Drummer). Seriously. It’s been sampled 1364 times and counting, by an amazing assortment of artists, including most of the big names in rap and hip-hop.
He was an amazing jam drummer, living and breathing the music, and an inspiration for so many artists. His music was the epitome of funk, and the world is a quieter place without him.
Rest in peace, Clyde.
